Meet Bakary Konateh: Gambian Agripreneur Turning Challenges into Opportunities

Bakary Konateh, a young entrepreneur from The Gambia, is making waves with his new agribusiness project, Mansaring’s GreenGrown. Holding a degree in Chemistry and Biology from the University of The Gambia, Bakary is focused on creating sustainable farming solutions that empower local communities.

After completing training through the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) in business and entrepreneurship, Bakary launched a welding business. Although the venture started strong, it collapsed due to management challenges and staff migration. Undeterred by this setback, Bakary turned his focus to agriculture and clean energy, developing a biofuel project that, despite not materializing, set a new vision.

Bakary credits his wife, an accountant, for helping him reshape his business approach. Together, they secured land to build Mansaring’s GreenGrown, which is set to focus on growing tropical crops like strawberries, bananas, pawpaw, and oranges, while also raising livestock such as rams. The business aims not only to produce fresh agricultural products but also to provide training and job opportunities for young people, especially women.

“We want to build a business that lasts for generations and offers real hope to our community,” Bakary said. Production is set to begin in September 2025.
